Back on the coast, the Shiva temples at Gokarna and Murudeshwar have the same legend regarding their origin. It is believed that Ravana was returning to his kingdom with the shivlinga that he had collected from Mount Kailash. He was met on the way by Ganapathi in the form of a shepherd. Ravana asked Ganapathi to hold the lingam, while he carried out his evening prayers. Ganapathi agreed to do so, provided Ravana took it back from him at the count of three. As soon as he counted three, the wily Ganapathi put the lingam down from where Ravana found it impossible to take it out. While the Shivling at Gokarna is housed in an unplastered laterite-walled temple, there is much construction activity around the temple at Murudeshwar.

From the laterite mound on which the Murudeshwar temple and the guest houses stand, one can watch fishing boats come in to fish in the calmer waters of the bay at dusk, while at the other end of the crescent the light house throws its beam into the sea at regular intervals.
