KRSSDI 2008 - Abstract

The Karnataka  Chapter of Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (KRSSDI) in association with Department of Medicine, Kasturba  Medical  College, Mangalore held their IV Annual Conference on 1st & 2nd of November at TMA Pai International Convention Centre, Mangalore. The academic programme was inaugurated on the auspicious occasion of “Kannada Rajyotsava” on bright sunny morning of 1st November.

The programme began by offering our prayers to the Almighty with the invocation ceremony followed by lightening of lamps by Dr.Raj.P.Warrier – Vice Chancellor, Manipal University & Guest of Honour; Dr.C.V.Raghuveer - Dean, Kasturba  Medical  College, Mangalore and Chief Guest; Dr.C.Munichoodappa & Dr. Prasanna Kumar – Patron KRSSDI; Dr.Aravind S.R. – Chairman, KRSSDI; Dr.Vageesh Ayyar – Secretary KRSSDI and Dr. Sydney D’souza – Organizing Chairman – KRSSDI 2008 and HOD, Department of Medicine, Kasturba  Medical  College, Mangalore. This was followed by an enlightening inaugural address by Dr.C.V.Raghuveer. Dr.Sydney D’Souza then introduced the guest of honour followed by a vibrant speech from Dr. Raj Warrier on Diabetes in Children.  Dr. C Munichoodappa honored the gathering by releasing the Souvenir for KRSSDI - 2008.  Subsequently, Dr.Aravind S.R. addressed the delegates, which was followed by a vote of thanks by Dr.Vageesh Ayyar.

After the inaugural function started the feast of lectures by various eminent speakers.  Dr.Ganapathi started the lectures by elaborating on changing pathophysiology of Type-II DM.  We then had a fantastic thought provoking lecture by Dr. V. Mohan, Director, M V Diabetes Centre, Chennai, who spoke on the topic “The Diabetic epidemic in India can be tackled !!”. Theme “CURES Study”. In this CURES Study, the lower middle class people of Chennai with Impaired glucose tolerance were divided into two groups. First group did regular exercise by walking in a park which was designed by themselves, while the other group did not indulge in any specific activity. At the end of the study, first group showed less conversion rate to Diabetes compared to second group suggesting importance of exercise in prevention of diabetes!

Dr. Rema Mohan enlightened the delegates on current concepts in the diagnosis and management of Diabetic Retinopathy. Dr. Shashank Joshi, Endocrinologist from Mumbai spoke on the latest ADA guidelines for diabetes management.

We also had excellent lectures by Dr Aravins S R, Dr Sudha Vidyasagar, Dr Srikanta S, Dr Ganesha, Dr Devraj, Dr Mala Dharmalingam and a panel discussion on inititating insulin therapy in out patient setting by Dr Balasubramaniyam, Dr Vageesh Ayyar and Dr N R Rao. After the strenuous sessions from morning till evening it was time to relax.

On Sunday November 2nd, Dr.Prabha Adhikari spoke on how to set a Diabetic Clinic. Dr.Prasanna Kumar enlightened on newer drugs and modalities of treatment in Diabetes which included incretins & insulin analogues. Dr. Prem Pais delivered state of the art lecture on how to do research in clinical practice.

The highlight of the conference was the participation of Post Graduates.  They presented as many as 21 posters and 6 podium presentations regarding different aspects of Diabetes. This was in tune with educating and motivating younger generation to create interest in research activities.

We also had thought provoking lectures by Dr Arun K N, Dr Mathew John, Dr Unnikrishnan A G & Dr S R Chandra. This  day, we also had a panel discussion on the role of diet and exercise in diabetes  by Dr Vaishali, Dr Padmini, and Dr R V Bhat.

All the delegates enjoyed each and every session on Diabetes as this helped in widening their horizons in understanding and managing Diabetes.

There was no doubt that the conference was a huge success. All the delegates were greatly touched by the warmth & the enthusiasm of the organizing committee members.  The organizing committee which was greatly responsible for the success of this conference was headed by Dr. Sydney D’Souza and supported by organizing secretary Dr.Vishal Garg, Dr.Tarun Varma and Dr.Alam Nawaz.
