The Kodachadri peak near Kollur is at a altitude of 4,411 ft in the Mookambika Nature Reserve and is an ideal place for trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts. Kodachadri, which is endowed with rich flora and fauna and natural resources, is also one of the leading pilgrim centres. Kodachadri is reputed for its splendid sunrises and sunsets. Kodachadri forms a picturesque background to the famous temple of Mookambika in Kollur. The name is a corruption of the Sanskrit word "Kutakachalam".

However, reaching Kodachadri is not that easy. The inhospitable road with steep gradients and sharp curves can be negotiated only by jeeps and motorcycles. Devotees visiting the Mookambika temple at Kollur also trek to Kodachadri as part of their pilgrimage. Very frequently people hire jeeps to reach the shrine atop the hill for the darshan of the deities and to see the Sarvajna Peetha of Jagadguru Shankaracharya. It is believed, Shankaracharya once meditated at the peak of the the hill at a place now called 'Sarvagna Peeta' and installed the 'Moola Mookambika' statue translating to 'The Original Mookambika' at the temple below.
